OLD TOWN
You can't go to Salvador, without spending time in the old city of colourful colonial buildings, cobblestoned streets and a sense of history clustered around the Largo do Pelourinho, also known as Praça José de Alencar.
This part of Salvador is known as PELOURINHO,the city within a city.
So why not make your stay in The PELOURINHO???
Nicknamed PELO by residents this area is in the older part of the upper city, or Cidade Alta, of Salvador. It encompasses several blocks around the triangular Largo, and it is the location for music, dining and nightlife.
Pelourinho means whipping post in Portuguese, and this was the old slave auction location in the days when slavery was common.
Slavery was outlawed in 1835,and over time, this portion of the city, though home to artists and musicians, fell into disrepair.
In the 1990's, a major restoration effort resulted in making the area a highly desirable tourist attraction.
Pelourinho has a place on the national historic register and named a world cultural center by UNESCO.
Easily walkable, Pelo has something to see along every street, including churches, cafes, restaurants, shops and the pastel-hued buildings. Police patrol the area to ensure safety.
For some people Pelourinho offers the perfect spot in Salvador, plenty of museums, churches & history, whilst at night it becomes a completely different neighborhood with the implementation of the project Pelourinho Day and Night, in Quincas Berro d'Água, Tereza Batista and Pedro Arcanjo Squares.
Try to arrange your trip so you can stay at least one Tuesday in Pelourinho.
Tuesday night is Pelourinho's biggest party night. It's called benção (or "blessing"), from an origin in the Igreja do Santo Antônio's custom of giving away bread to the poor on Tuesday evenings.
Bahia has a way of turning religious events into parties, and that's exactly what happens here; lots of people, lots of music, and lots of dancing. Benção is even bigger during the summer months (December, January, February), and the biggest parties during any given month are the first and last of that month (that's when people get paid!)
Musical groups perform a variety of styles including jazz, blues, bossa nova, "Brazilian Popular Music" (MPB), samba and chorinho.
Because of its vibrant atmosphere it can be difficult in Pelourinho to find a hostel that offers good vicinity to all the action & a bed where a peaceful, good nights' sleep can be achieved, but at Galeria 13 we are confident you will not find the 2 minutes walk too far to find your first street filled with action,be it drum band passing by, roda of capoeira or local musicians playing at a bars terrace.
BUT If it's a good sleep you desire,
after a full day of culture beavering
Then The hostel located on a quiet street
Can also offer that option!
